Canadian Mennonite University is a private Mennonite university located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with an enrollment of 1607 students. The university was chartered in 1999 with a Shaftesbury campus in southwest Winnipeg, as well as Menno Simons College and a campus at The University of Winnipeg.

International Students

Applications for the 2020-2021 academic year are now closed. Applications for Fall 2021 may be submitted after October 15, 2020. An application fee of $150 is required. International students studying in Canada with a valid student permit can apply before August 1 for Fall semester and November 1 for Winter semester.

STEP 1:

STEP 2:

Send in a clear, easy-to-read copy of your most recent transcript and a list of current classes

  • Original official transcripts from high school (once complete) and/or any post-secondary institution attended. All transcripts submitted as part of the application and/or transfer credit process become the property of Canadian Mennonite University and will not be returned.
  • If you are still completing grade 12 or a post-secondary course of study, submit a copy of your most recent grades (interim transcript) as well as a list of current courses you are enrolled in. (Make sure your name, school name, and any necessary identification numbers appear on the copy. Scanned copies are welcome.)
  • Check your email! Keep in touch with your admissions counsellor in the following few weeks to find out about your admittance status. Standard applicants should find out after two weeks if they are eligible for admittance to CMU.

We're here to help students with their post-secondary financial expenses. CMU offers nearly 400 scholarships and bursaries to students. In 2018-2019, over 50% of CMU's students received some amount of scholarship or bursary funding.

International Students

CMU recognizes that COVID-19 is causing delays and uncertainties with obtaining original documents and transcripts, English proficiency testing, and study visas and permits. CMU is not waiving any of these requirements. Students affected by these delays should contact CMU to discuss deferring applications and enrolment to the following term or academic year.

International Students: CMU recognizes that COVID-19 is causing delays and uncertainties with obtaining original documents and transcripts, English proficiency testing, and study visas and permits. CMU is not waiving any of these requirements. However, to make it possible to meet these requirements, CMU will accept electronic transcripts under the following conditions:

 

  • CMU will accept electronic transcripts only for those applying for the Fall 2020, Winter 2021, and Spring 2021 intakes.
  • Electronic transcripts must be official transcripts submitted to CMU directly from the institution. The transcripts must be sent from the Registrar's Office of the institution, using an email address which is published and easily accessible on the institution's website.
  • Admission based on electronic transcripts will be conditional. Final admission will only be granted after CMU receives official hard copies of the transcripts, sent by the institution. The hardcopies of the transcripts must be identical to the transcripts on which conditional admission was based. Students will not be able to begin studies at CMU until hard copies of the transcripts have been received and reviewed.
  • Letters of Conditional Acceptance, for use when applying for a study permit and visa, will be provided when conditional acceptance is granted. Students facing additional disruptions to the application process due to the COVID-19 situation should contact CMU to discuss deferring applications and enrolment to the following term or academic year.

International students at CMU have a wide variety of undergraduate options available to them including three and four year BA degrees with a choice of 19 majors, as well as bachelor degrees in Music, Music Therapy, Business Administration (BBA) and Science (BSc).

CMU also offers a Master of Arts in Theological Studies, Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Christian Ministry, Master of Arts in Peacebuilding and Collaborative Development, and a Master of Business Administration.

As a small, Christian, liberal arts university, CMU welcomes international students and values the experiences, perspectives and gifts that they bring. CMU is committed to support international students academically, emotionally, culturally, and spiritually as they transition to a Canadian university setting.

Academic and English Language Proficiency Requirements

International applicants must meet Academic Requirements and English Language Proficiency Requirements in order to apply and be considered for admission.

1. International Requirements by Country:
Undergraduate Students must meet one of the following in order to apply:

  • Meet Country Specific Requirements
  • Successfully complete an internationally examined curriculum
  • Graduate from a high school in Canada or the USA
  • Successfully completed a minimum of one year of full-time studies at a university of college in Canada or the USA


2. English Proficiency Requirements:

Refer to the country specific requirements that pertain to you. Your country may require English Proficiency Exam results. Results must be less than two years old. English Proficiency may be demonstrated by one of the following tests:

 a. CMU will temporarily accept the Duolingo English Test:

  • A minimum score of 115 (online)

b. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):

  • A minimum score of 550 (paper-based) with no less than 50 in each component
  • or a minimum score of 213 (computer-based) with no less than 17 in each component
  • or a minimum score of 80 (Internet-based) with no less than 19 in each component
  • or a minimum score of 80 (Internet-based Special Home Edition) with no less than 19 in each component

c. International English Language Testing System (IELTS):

  • Academic Module in-person: Minimum band score of 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in each individual component.
  • Temporarily accept IELTS Indicator: Minimum band score of 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in each individual component.

d. CanTest: An average score of 4.5 in Listening and Reading and a score of 4.0 in Writing*

  • (*a score of 3.5 in Writing may be considered, provided the student is registered in ACWR-1010 Writing for Academic Purposes in their first semester)

e. Cambridge English Assessment Scale:

  • A minimum score of 'C' on the C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency Test.

f. MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery):

  • Minimum score of 80%

g. CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment)Computer and Online:

  • Minimum score of 60

h. PTE (Pearson Test of English – Academic):

  • Minimum of score of 58

i. Successful completion of the AEPUCE (Academic English Program for University and College Entrance) offered at the University of Manitoba or a comparable program at a recognized University.

j. Successful completion of Academic Level 5 in the English Language Program (ELP) at The University of Winnipeg with a minimum C+ in English and a minimum C in all other components

k. ESP (English for Specific Purposes Program) at the University of Winnipeg with a Minimum C+ in Academic Writing 1 and 2.

Books, transportation, and personal effects are not included in this deposit. This policy applies to all students who are not citizens of USA or Canada.

International students who are currently studying in the USA or Canada and have been there for seven months or more, are not required to pay the advance deposit. The basic costs of one academic year (September to April) of full-time undergraduate study while living in on-campus housing as a single student are:




If you plan to live on campus from May–August, there are additional room and board charges estimated at $2,000–3,000.

Payment Information

CMU has partnered with Flywire (a money transfer service) to help international students make easier payments for tuition and room and board. Payment can be made directly from your home country to your student account.

International Students who are denied a permit or visa will have their funds returned to them minus a $100 administration fee. The deposit will be refunded in accordance with currency rates at time of refund.

 Scholarships and Bursaries

CMU Funding

CMU does not offer full tuition scholarships. International students can apply for specialized awards and scholarships.

Undergraduate students should consult our Scholarships & Awards webpage for more information. The deadline for these applications is February 28. International students are not eligible for the Leadership Scholarship or academic entrance scholarships.

Graduate students should consult the Graduate Studies Awards page for information on available scholarships and bursaries. Applications received after the deadlines will not be considered. Bursary applications must be submitted by:

  • April 30: MBA admits
  • May 31: Graduate Program admits (non-MBA) starting in September (fall semester)
  • July 20: Graduate Program admits starting in January (winter semester)

Admitted International Undergraduate students (any student who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or refugee) Request the International Bursary Application Parts One (application) and Part Two (budget) from financialaid@cmu.ca or mkrohn@cmu.ca.

Applications received after the deadlines will not be considered. Bursary applications must be submitted by:

  • May 31: International Undergraduate admits starting in September (fall semester)
  • Nov 10: International Undergraduate admits starting in January (winter semester)

Church Matching grants are available to all CMU students. For international students, CMU will match any funds provided by a local church up to $1,000.

Canadian Government Funding

The Canadian Government is willing to take applications for their Study in Canada Scholarships

ONLY citizens of one of the following countries are eligible to apply:
Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Comoros, Djibouti, Fiji, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Liberia, Mauritania, Micronesia, Palau, Tonga, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Vanuatu. Palestinian students from the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem are also eligible.

NOTE: Palestinian candidate students residing in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem are eligible, and may be requested to provide supporting documentation demonstrating their Palestinian identity.

Only students in one or two year programs are eligible for this scholarship which means that, at CMU, only students in the Master of Arts or Master of Business Administration are eligible. Students MUST indicate their interest in being considered for the Study in Canada Scholarships program on their application in order to be considered. CMU will consider (but not guarantee) applying on behalf of eligible admitted students. This IS NOT a CMU scholarship, and CMU has no influence on the decision.

How to Apply

STEP 1:

Be aware of Application Deadlines

Students must submit their complete application, including application, application fee, and all required supporting documentation by the deadlines below.

STEP 2:

Complete an Application Form

Apply: If you meet the criteria above, you are ready to apply for admission to CMU! There are two ways to apply: you can apply online (Undergraduate, Graduate) or you can print out a PDF application form (Undergraduate, Graduate) and mail or fax it to CMU. Ensure you apply for on-campus housing.

STEP 3:

Pay $150 Application Fee (non-refundable)

Your application must be accompanied by a non-refundable payment of the $150 application fee. CMU has partnered with Flywire (a money transfer service) to help make the payment process easier for international students. Payment can be made directly from your home country to your student account.

STEP 4:

Submit Supporting Documentation

Undergraduate

Transcripts: CMU requires official transcripts (direct from the school/institution) to determine your eligibility. These documents should be mailed to CMU. CMU will accept interim electronic documents as official for students currently studying high school when sent directly from the school. Once high school is completed, official documents must be mailed directly from the school.

If you require these transcripts back please inform us IN WRITING (either with a letter, or email). We will send you your transcripts back either by post (with an additional charge for postage), or hold them until you arrive at CMU. It is CMU policy to only hold onto students files for three years, after which time their file will be shredded (in following Canadian information laws).

Graduate

Graduate students should consult the Grad Studies Application page and program specific pages for the supporting documentation required for their program.

STEP 5:

Include English Proficiency Exam Results

International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English. International students must have recent exam results (less than two years). These documents should be mailed to CMU.

STEP 6:

Receive Notification of Admission from CMU

We will assess your application only after we have received your completed application form, your non-refundable application fee, and all required supporting documentation. We will assess your application and contact you regarding your acceptance. Undergraduate applicants can expect to hear from us within three to four weeks. Graduate applicants can expect a response in six to eight weeks. You can expect a response even if your application is not successful.

Offers of admission can only be deferred for two years. After two years, a student must re-apply for admission.

STEP 7:

Apply for On-Campus Housing (if you hope to live on campus)

  • You may apply for On-Campus Housing in one of three ways:
  • When applying for On-Campus Housing we require a housing application and TWO housing reference forms. You will need to make sure that the two reference forms (e.g. a teacher, pastor, community leader—no relatives) are all filled out and sent to us directly.   • Housing is not assigned to international students until a student has received a study permit and has paid the full advance deposit. On-campus housing is not guaranteed; students may want to explore off-campus options in advance as finding suitable housing can take some time. Feel free to contact Charlie Peronto, Residence Director, with any questions or for more information.

STEP 8:

Use your Acceptance Letter to Apply for a Study Permit

  • If you meet CMU's entrance criteria, and CMU has received the fees and all documents referred to above, CMU's Admissions Coordinator will send you an official Letter of Acceptance. You can use either a Conditional or Final Letter of Acceptance to apply for your Study Permit. CMU will issue an electronic copy of the letter that can be used to apply for a Study Permit online. Canadian Immigration encourages online applications, and we have noticed that the process is much quicker and efficient than going in-person to the Canadian Embassy in that country.
  • You will be issued a FINAL Letter of Acceptance once you have completed your current educational program and provide us with final official transcripts (direct from the school/institution). You will need the final letter of acceptance in order to enter Canada, and continue with studies at CMU.
  • You will need a Visitor Visa or eTA to enter Canada and a Study Permit to study in Canada– Consult the CIC Visa website. We encourage you to book your flight to travel direct to Canada. Please note, when planning your travel to CMU to study, we strongly encourage you NOT to travel through the USA. If you travel through the USA, even if you end up only transferring flights, you MUST apply for a US Visitor's Visa or ESTA.
  • When you receive the permit and visa, CMU requires:
    • A copy/scan of your passport
    • A copy/scan of your visa (usually stamped into your passport)
    • A copy/scan of your Permit confirmation letter

Agents/Agencies 

It is CMU's practice not to partner with agents/agencies. However, we recognize that some International students may choose to work with agents or agencies to negotiate the complicated process of applying for university, study permits, and visas.

CMU prefers to communicate directly with our applicants. We ask that personal contact information for the student is included on their application. CMU will contact students directly, while copying their chosen agent/agency. Transparent and prompt communication with the student is our main concern.

To students, when/if selecting an agent/agency, we strongly urge you to make certain they are a registered agent/agency/representative with Canadian Immigration, ICCRC or ICEF.

Health Insurance 

It is a mandatory requirement for all international students to purchase health insurance through CMU. This is designed to protect both the student and CMU from unexpected health costs.

Guard.me International Insurance is the health insurance provider for CMU international students. Guard.me has provided health insurance to international students since 1998. Enrolment in the guard.me more plan is mandatory for all international students.

What does the plan cost?
All international students will automatically be enrolled in an annual plan beginning the 15th of the month before they begin classes. The annual cost of the plan is $789.00/student and is included in the deposit required of all new international students. More information regarding the health insurance plan and benefits will be available at guard.me/cmu

When do I have to pay for my health insurance?
For new students the health insurance cost is included in the advance deposit. Returning students will need to pay the full amount by August 1 (fall students) or November 1 (winter students) each academic year.

How do I pay?
Please refer to the Student Payment Policy for payment options.

How do I enroll in the guard.me more plan?
The Coordinator of International Student Programs will enrol all international students. You will receive a digital card through your CMU email that includes your personal policy/identification number. Make sure to download the card to your phone.

What does my health insurance cover?
A benefits summary was sent to your CMU email. Additional information regarding your plan is also available on the guard.me website.

For further explanations of your benefits and to learn how to submit claims, you can attend an orientation session regarding health insurance benefits and claims with a guard.me representative during the mandatory international orientation week.

What if I have purchased health insurance independently?
Alternate plans will not be considered. Enrolment in the guard.me more plan is mandatory for all international students.

My family will be coming to Canada with me. Are they covered under the guard.me health insurance?
Spouses and/or dependents are not covered by the health insurance plan that you have purchased through CMU. However, you can add your family to your health insurance plan. For the lowest cost, the student can enroll family members within 30 days of receiving confirmation of their own enrollment. Later enrollment will result in higher fees for family members.

It is the student's responsibility to enroll family members. Please contact admin@guard.me for additional information about adding family members.

Pregnancy Coverage
Please take note of the policy wording regarding pregnancy for students or their spouses. "Where pregnancy commences after the Effective Date of this Policy, or within the 30 days prior to the Effective Date, when this Policy is purchased at the time of enrollment in a college or university, prenatal care, childbirth and newborn care (up to age 15 days) are covered up to a combined Benefit Maximum of $25,000. The insurance must be in effect for the entire term of the pregnancy. Serious complications due to pregnancy are covered up to an additional maximum of $25,000. Serious complications do not include normal conditions of pregnancy including but not limited to morning sickness, spotting, ultrasounds, blood and urine testing, including testing for gestational diabetes." Academic Expectations 

CMU is a university that has high academic expectations of all students. We promote academics in the following ways:

Emphasis on Writing
When you study at CMU, students will encounter diverse understandings of writing and will be engaged in the practice of writing. You will be expected to write  research papers as well as book reports, reviews, and/or case studies. In addition, undergraduate students will need to take either a writing intensive ('W') course or the course: ACWR-1010 Writing for Academic Purposes.

Emphasis on Analytical Skills
Strong analytical skills are required at CMU. Strong mathematical skills are essential if you are studying in the areas of business, biology, chemistry, or pre-professional programs in the health field. All students are required to complete six credit hours (two courses) in the areas of mathematics or science.

Class Attendance
Class attendance is critical for academic success. If you miss class, your professor will notice your absence and you will miss valuable information you cannot get from your textbook.

Biblical and Theological Studies Requirement
Through course work in Biblical and Theological Studies, students gain a foundational grasp of the story, language, and content of the Christian faith. Undergraduate students are required to take 6 credit hours (2 courses) in the area of Biblical and Theological Studies (BTS) in your first year and 18 credit hours of BTS within your degree.

Academic Integrity
CMU has a high standard for student conduct in the classroom and in academic work. We expect that the work you complete is your own words, thoughts, and arguments. Plagiarism, cheating, impersonation, and forging are types of academic misconduct that are not acceptable at CMU. We know our students and take academic integrity seriously.

Application fraud and why it is serious

  • It is an act of serious academic misconduct to provide any false or misleading information (either by omission or commission) in your application.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that your application information and all supporting documentation is truthful, complete and correct. CMU reserves the right to verify any information provided as part of your application.
  • If it is proven, or if the university has reasonable grounds to conclude, that any information in your application, or in any of the material submitted in support of your application, is determined to be false or misleading, or written by a third party including a recruiter, your application may be invalidated at the absolute and sole discretion of CMU.
  • If you have been admitted to CMU, and then come forward with a transcript from a different university that you did not declare on your application form (intending to get transfer credit), CMU will not consider transfer credit and your status at CMU will be assessed by the Registrar's Office at the end of the semester.

 Work 

Working in Canada

  • International students who hold a Canadian study permit may gain work experience while completing their studies. Your study permit will allow you to work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions and work full-time during scheduled breaks, such as the winter and summer holidays or reading week. For further information please consult the CIC Student Work Permit Website.
  • Students wishing to work on or off campus must obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN card) prior to beginning work. Application information can be obtained from the Coordinator of International Student Programs upon arrival at CMU.
  • Off-campus work privileges are issued under the conditions of your study permit. To work off campus, you will need to complete and comply with the following:
    • You must be enrolled in full-time studies in programs of 6 months or more at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). The DLI number for CMU will be included in your acceptance package.
    • You may work no more than 20 hours per week when studying, and full-time during regularly scheduled breaks (i.e. summer break, Christmas break, reading week).
    • You are allowed to work until the expiration date listed on your study permit. At that time, you need to apply for a work permit.
    • You must continue to meet the conditions of your study permit in order to remain eligible for employment.

NOTE: It is possible to receive a post-graduate work permit up to a maximum of three years after studies (the degree) are complete. Click here for more information about study permits, temporary resident visas, post-graduate work permits, co-op work permits, etc.

On-Campus Jobs

There are limited on-campus jobs that international students can apply for prior to or upon arrival. International students are eligible to work on campus when they receive their valid study permit. However, it will not help with immigration requirements. The money earned in this work cannot be counted on when you apply to study in Canada.

Mandatory International Orientation 

International Student Orientation begins on September 2, 2020 (fall start) or January 2, 2021 (winter start).

International students beginning their studies in September are required to arrive in Winnipeg by September 2, 2020. International students beginning their studies in January are required to arrive in Winnipeg by January 2, 2021. It is important for you to attend. We require that when you book your flights, you plan to arrive by that date.  Please do not book your flight before you pay your deposit. Once your flight is booked, please confirm the dates and times with CMU. Students beginning at other start dates should contact their admission counsellor for orientation dates.

CMU recognizes that the transition to Canada and to post-secondary education can be challenging for new international students. The following areas will be covered during the orientation sessions:

  • Canadian Cultural/Social Norms (including human rights, sexual harassment, relationship expectations, social cues
  • Transition Issues (normalizing homesickness, culture shock, mental health and well-being, food)

Examples of sessions offered:

  • Academics at CMU (academic integrity, critical thinking, library orientation, PAL, tutoring); course registration and other institutional paperwork
  • Health care in Canada
  • Finances (Financial Aid, setting up payment plans, understanding income tax)
  • Employment (on-campus employment program & applications, understanding Canadian workplace culture)
  • Introduction to Winnipeg (Winnipeg Transit; Shopping – set up cell phone plans, pick up bedding, toiletries)
  • Outings to Assiniboine Park and The Forks

NOTE

For the Fall semester, the start date for classes is September 8, 2020

International students MUST be registered by/or during Orientation for the start of classes. Students must begin attending classes on the first day of the semester. We recognize that international travel can sometimes be difficult, however, NO STUDENT will be allowed to register for courses later than the first day of classes – no exceptions.

For the winter semester, the start date for classes is January 6, 2021. International students MUST be registered for classes by January 2, ready to start by January 6. NO STUDENT will be allowed to start classes later than Friday, January 8, 2021.

For the spring/summer semester, students should contact their admissions counsellor for registration and course start dates.

CMU is a small campus in which you get to know faculty, staff, and fellow students. We encourage and expect our students to contribute to class discussions and participate in community activities. Who Can Help

  • Student Leadership – There are a number of student leaders that support international students in their first few weeks of university.
  • International Student Council (ISC) – The International Student Council works to raise awareness of the presence of international students on campus, provides a voice for international students and strives to address the issues that this community faces during their time at CMU. International Student Council leaders assist in planning orientation and providing programming and events on campus throughout the year that support the mission of the International Student Council.
  • International Student Mentors (ISMs) – International Student Mentors are assigned to each new international student when they arrive for orientation. These student leaders assist new students in navigating the various items associated with beginning university and moving to Canada.
  • Resident Assistants (RAs) – RAs are student leaders who facilitate the social, academic, and personal adjustment of residential students to University. The RA helps to develop a sense of community among residents as members of a floor and active participants in the residence life system. The RAs are the go-to people for any questions or concerns for residential students.
  • Commuter Assistants (CAs) – CAs meet on a regular basis to discuss issues and concerns that relate to the commuter students of CMU. They are committed to creating opportunities through which commuters are able to gather together and interact with other students, staff, and faculty within the CMU community. The CAs also work to serve the commuter student population through advocacy, orientation to the CMU campus, and general assistance. Meetings are chaired by the Coordinator of Commuter Programs.
  • Coordinator of International Student Programs – oversees orientation and programs for international students; one of the main points of contact for international students during their time at CMU.
  • Residence Director – oversees all residence programs and housing at CMU; available to help with any questions related to on-campus housing.

Resources for Success

CMU offers support in a number of areas to help students succeed:

Academic Resources: There are volunteer tutors available and a peer tutor program (PAL) to help students succeed academically.

Course and Program Selection: There is academic advising available for all students from staff and faculty. There is also a career counsellor available.

Finances: The Financial and Student Services Advisor is available to help students finance their education.

International Student Services: International Student Council, International Student Mentors, and the Coordinator of International Students are available to help students.

Counselling: CMU has trained counsellors available to talk with students at no cost to the student.

Get Involved

CMU is a vibrant university characterized by academic rigour, faith integration, community character, and a world citizenship focus. Getting involved in the CMU community is important for your academic success as well as for your social, physical, and mental well-being. Here are some ways to get involved:

Athletics: CMU has women and men's varsity teams in soccer, basketball, volleyball, and futsal. We also have a fitness room available to all students.

Spiritual Life: Nourish your faith and spiritual life by participating in chapels, fellowship groups, Wednesday night worship, community gatherings, and/or visiting the prayer room.

Volunteer Opportunities: Get involved in student leadership in one of the following ways: Student Council, student newspaper (DOXA), yearbook, sports and recreation, social activities, volunteer tutoring, fellowship groups, and social justice initiatives.

On-campus Employment: CMU maintains and offers a large number of diverse student employment positions, available both during the school year and through the summer.

Housing On-Campus

There are quite a few options for living on campus. CMU's on-campus housing options include apartments, shared dormitory rooms, and single dorm rooms in three different buildings all close to a full-service dining hall. Learn more about CMU's housing.

If you wish to live at CMU during your studies here, you will need to apply for on-campus housing; your application must be accompanied by two references. For an online housing application or PDF version, and printable reference forms, click here.

Housing is limited, so please apply early to secure a space. Housing applications for September start are due May 30. Applications for a January start are due November 30. Please note that housing will be assigned after confirmation of study permit has been received.

Housing is not assigned to international students until a student has received a study permit and has paid the full advance deposit. On-campus housing is not guaranteed; students may want to explore off-campus options in advance as finding suitable housing can take some time. Dorms Closed

CMU is closed over the two-week Christmas break. This means that the dormitories are CLOSED, and there is no food services available during the holiday break.

Students who are living in the dormitories are not allowed to stay on campus during the holiday break. We acknowledge that international students travel a great distance, and are unable to leave Winnipeg for the holiday break.

CMU will work hard to help you find a host, but it is also your responsibility to work with us. CMU cannot guarantee that we can find every student a host. This is why we encourage all our international students to engage in the CMU community, a lot of benefit can come from making genuine connections with Canadian students.

 Housing Off-Campus 

If you want to live off campus, CMU is not responsible for finding you off-campus housing. CMU is located in the South West quadrant of the city, in the neighbourhood of Tuxedo. When selecting an apartment, you may want to take proximity into consideration. There are a number of online websites you can use to find affordable housing. Here are a few to help you get started in your search:

Things to Consider When Looking for Housing in Winnipeg

  • Bus connections – how much time do you want to spend commuting to school?
  • Proximity to CMU, grocery stores, day care, schools
  • Make sure that you have a good landlord and know your rights as a tenant. Become familiar with the Manitoba Tenancies Branch website.
  • Remember to find out what is included in your rental cost.
    • Are utilities included? If so, which ones? Hydro, water, heat, internet, phone?
    • Is it furnished or unfurnished?
    • What is the damage deposit? Is a down payment required? If so, how much?
    • Are pets allowed? Is there a pet damage deposit?

Neighbourhoods to Consider in Winnipeg
There are lots of housing options in Winnipeg, so the following are just suggestions and not to be limitations for an international student looking for housing.

  • River Heights, St. James, Tuxedo, Charleswood, and Crescentwood are all located fairly close to the CMU campus with good bus connections, but may be a little expensive unless you have roommates.
  • Wolseley, Sargent Park, and West End neighbourhoods (especially those closer to Portage Ave. between Kenaston Blvd. and Home St.) are a little further from campus, but are closer to downtown and have great bus connections to the university. These neighbourhoods typically offer lots of rooms and apartments for rent at reasonable prices.
  • Housing near the University of Manitoba, in Transcona neighbourhood or along North Main or Main St. may be less expensive but can cost you a lot of time commuting to CMU (one to two hours of commuting one way with multiple bus connections).
